Teenage girls can be cruel to anyone who doesn’t fit in, and Fey took that fact and ran with it, coming up with the sweet and naive new kid, Cady Heron, who moves from Kenya to Chicago and lands in a high school divided, like every high school, into cliques. There are the art freaks, math geeks, jocks, rich-kid stoners and more, but it’s the Plastics who are at the top of the food chain.
The story begins in Africa, where Cady lives an idyllic existence, making friends with animals, being schooled at home and not giving a whit about having the right shoes. After moving to the United States, her first friends are misfits, including “too gay to function” Damian and “space dyke” Janis . Both are strong, relatable characters who lend authenticity to the tale.Article content
This is all unfolding on a spectacular set that transforms in the blink of an eye from Africa to the school’s washroom, hallway and cafeteria to students’ homes, thanks to some skillful prop manoeuvring, ingenious lighting design and the magic of digital images. The influence of social media is reflected, too, in the images of messages and status updates that pile up when things get dramatic, demonstrating how impossible it is to ignore the constant chatter.
