It’s long past time that Canada Soccer stepped up and added its voice to that call, said Michael Page of Human Rights Watch. “The hope is that Canada Soccer, with the ethics and values that it espouses, can support migrant workers who are just trying to be paid their fair share and what they’re owed from the serious abuses they face and push FIFA for a remedy fund,” he said. “We think that’s a reasonable ask.”
Page, who grew up playing soccer in the U.S., says he understands the appeal of watching the World Cup and the excitement of Canadian fans, given this is the first time the men’s team has qualified for the tournament in 36 years. But none of that precludes the national soccer federation from backing a specific measure that could make a real difference for workers, he said.
