Their win over Washington, in which Giroux played a major role by setting up Tim Stutzle for a late second period goal and the red-hot Alex DeBrincat for the game winner, marked the first time this season they had rallied for a victory when trailing after two periods. “It was hard to look at it there for awhile,” coach D.J. Smith said of the Senators spot in the standings. “But we have said we just want to get back into the pack. We knew with all the injuries we had that we had to start playing better defensively and the nights that we haven’t , we’ve had great goaltending. So, some things have come together. We’ve got one more in December to have what I think is a pretty good month.
Goaltender Cam Talbot, who arrived from the Minnesota Wild in a summer swap for Filip Gustavsson, has found his game after an inconsistent beginning with the Senators. He has gone 7-2-1, with a 2.77 goals against average in December and has asserted himself as the current go-to goaltender with the wins over Boston and Washington.
