New report by Ontario Living Wage Network shows nearly 22 per cent spike in the hourly wage needed in order to make ends meet amid rising costs

A handful of businesses in Sault Ste. Marie will have to dig a lot deeper into their pockets if they want to maintain their status as a certified living wage employer.

“We’re going to have to be really looking at whether we are able to keep our living wage designation right now, because we do hire mainly entry-level positions,” he said. “That would mean pretty well the majority of our staff, all our labourers would have to see an increase, and all of our managers, we would have to move them up in scale with that to keep things fair and appropriate for everybody.

“A small part of that is we had to consolidate some regions, but really, what most of that increase is about is shelter and food, and the affordability of those items,” Pickthorne said. But the OLWN says there are actions that can be taken collectively in order to impact affordability, such as the national $10-a-day child-care program that has seen 92 per cent of licensed child-care operators in Ontario sign on to take part in.
