Longer term, “we’re looking at options to make Water Street car free or car-light” to make the key tourist attraction a more pedestrian friendly “destination neighbourhood,” Kirby-Yung said.
The announcement waiss a relief to Walley Wargolet, executive director of the Gastown Business Improvement Society, who said the business community has waited a long time for council to join in a more comprehensive plan for the neighbourhood. Worgolet’s society, in 2019, commissioned its own long-term study on potential revitalization with a view to connecting the neighbourhood’s “public realms,” such as the refurbished Blood Alley Square.“This neighbourhood has had a layered legacy I see this as the next layer,” Wargolet said.
