“Alfred Fitzpatrick’s most striking early contribution to adult literacy was the labourer-teacher concept — that a teacher would labour side by side with a worker at their job, then teach them at night,” writes Morrison. Many of the people Morrison worked with on the rails were immigrants from Italy, Russia and the former Yugoslavia and wanted to learn English. Others were from remote Indigenous communities and wanted a general educational development credential or high school equivalency diploma.More than 60 years before Morrison worked with Frontier College, Fitzpatrick had travelled to remote work camps as a Presbyterian minister.
“This work is a tribute to the people who give their best in dire and heartbreaking circumstances,” writes Landry. “The book is a heartfelt tribute to the Barho family and the many first responders and volunteers who have helped them. HEART is also assisting Ukrainian refugees and other international families who are escaping the ravages of war, political strife, and instability. Purchases of Eye of the Ocean help fund HEART’s work,” said Landry in a media release.
