The roads are open for the young and old, from elite runners to those with charitable causes on their minds.
The 2022 event was a welcome return to normalcy after the COVID-19 interruption, with 19,000 taking part in the marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometre, five-kilometre and two-kilometre events.
The event, which Ottawa Tourism estimates brings $30 million in economic activity to the city, has come a long way from its beginning in 1975, when 145 people signed up for the marathon. Elmore was fully engaged in everything involved with Friday’s launch party, telling the students how she fell in love with the sport as a 12-year-old.
The weekend also serves as a major fundraising event for the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. In the past 25 years, $11.8 million has been raised for health care.
