An early morning fire at the Richard Lake Campground office building has resulted in the arrest of a 36-year-old man

Just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 13, Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a structure fire at a campground office building on 2550 Richard Lake Road in Greater Sudbury. Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters determined it to be suspicious and contacted police at approximately 5:45 a.m.

Officers from the patrol operations and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and Forensics Unit attended the scene.Simultaneously, while investigating an unrelated matter, OPP officers came into contact with a man in the area of Highway 69 at Old Wanup Road who was in possession of items belonging to the Richard Lake Campground office building.

The OPP contacted GSPS immediately and officers were dispatched to speak with the man. GSPS said the man admitted to setting the fire at 2550 Richard Lake Road using items he found within the premises of the campground. As a result of the fire, there were no injuries reported; however, the structure did sustain significant damage in the range $87,000 - $100,000.

The man faces charges of arson, break and enter with intent, theft and possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, and a breach of probation order.
