Leslie Greenwood is led into Kentville Supreme Court Friday for an appearance ahead of a retrial on on first-degree murder charges in connection with the Hells Angels-related September 2000 killings of Barry Kirk Mersereau and Nancy Paula Christensen. The provincial Crown has lost its attempt to appeal the overturning of two first-degree murder convictions against Leslie Douglas Greenwood.
The Supreme Court of Canada rejected the Crown’s request for leave to appeal. As is almost always the case, it provided no reasons for its decision, which it handed down Thursday. Another man, Michael Lawrence, pleaded guilty in 2012 to first-degree murder in the killings of Mersereau and Christensen. He also pleaded guilty to murdering Charles Maddison, whose truck was used for transportation to the murder scene. Lawrence has testified at both trials that Greenwood was involved in the shooting, an allegation Greenwood has denied.
Crown attorney Peter Craig, who prosecuted the previous two trials and will be on the new one as well, said Friday that the new trial is unlikely to happen until next year because of the need to find court time. He said the trial also must work into his, co-counsel Shauna MacDonald’s and defence lawyer Oliver Abergel’s schedules.
