Council, in its last meeting of the current iteration before the newly elected members are sworn in next month, voted Monday, Nov. 21, to approve the project. The vote was 6-1, with Coun. Justin Doiron abstaining. Coun. Norma McColeman, whose ward includes Winter Street, was the sole vote opposed. Even some of the councillors who voted in favour of the motion stated their own trepidations with the location, with some suggesting that Winter Street should be a temporary home until a more suitable property could be identified to house the facility in the long term. But they also said they were unwilling to delay this potentially life-saving project.
The home at 287 Winter Street was previously owned by Community Connections and operated for years as a group home for some of that organization’s clients. It was sold to the province in March with the intention of it being used as a men’s shelter.
