Almost 1,500 Canadians are waiting on the federal government to arrange evacuation flights out of Sudan
, countries including Canada are trying to get diplomats and citizens safely out of the country. Almost 1,500 Canadians are formally registered there, but that number is likely to be higher. The Decibel’s Menaka Raman-Wilms spoke with Ahmed Osman and Esraa Fadul, two Sudanese Canadians from Toronto who are trapped in the country’s capital. Listen atWe are not going out. We try to go outside to get something to eat, and medicine and things like that, but we can’t.
There are some people who have access to the Nile River. So they go to the Nile and bring water. Some of them share it with their neighbours. And some don’t have access like us. We don’t have access to any place of water. Just a few people we know … they gave us some bottles to drink just to survive.Yes. We have a shortage in all basic human needs, like water, food, electricity, medication and medical care. We have more than 37 hospitals out of service – we don’t know where we should go.
How long do you think you can continue like this? It sounds like you don’t have a lot of water. You don’t have a lot of food.The Canadian government hasn’t been able to get evacuation flights out of out of the country yet. What does this mean for both of you?We know it’s not like they don’t want to, but it’s because of what’s happening in Sudan. But we hope that they can find any other solutions.
We hope the fighting stops. Innocent people have nothing to do with it, it’s between the army and the paramilitary forces.
