Vancouver\u002Dbased designer talks 50 years in business, celebrity connections, and the anniversary collection.

The ’80s and ’90s were a very robust business period. Lingerie was starting to make its way as statement outerwear — Madonna in the cone bra, Kate Moss wearing the slip dress — and that created possibilities for my designing. For me, I always saw the potential for innerwear as outerwear and so I introduced specific loungewear, which provided a bit more coverage.

Over the past few years, I have been very pleased to see bolder use of lingerie as outerwear for both day and night led of course by celebrities. For example, Victoria Beckham wearing a slip dress to her son’s wedding, JLo traveling in her silk PJs and Rihanna shopping in her nightie. That is exciting for me and translating to Christine as I see customers gravitating to our various gowns for evening wear and even bridal wear so I keep that dual purpose in mind as I design.

The ’90s were humbling and an incredible lesson in business. A new bank manager called in our line of credit, which was further complicated by an abundance of inventory. David and I loaded up an old van and rented a store on Granville to create what we would call a pop-up today. I remember the windows in this little space fogging up because there were so many people. We sold out and put the brand back on firm footing.
