The worst of Friday’s winter storm seems to have passed after the “once in a decade” weather event of freezing rain, heavy snowfall and gusting winds eased into the weekend.
“There is no question that the storm and the amount of snow were much less than expected, and that’s good news for everyone,” said Mayor John Tory during a press conference Saturday morning.
The remaining weather advisory is now in place calling for strong winds picking up to 80 km/h, flurries and scattered blowing snow that will last into the evening. Frigid temperatures will plunge to -13 C, with extremely cold wind chills hovering at -30 C for Toronto. Environment Canada continues to discourage non-essential travel due to hazardous driving conditions amidst changing weather patterns, slippery surfaces and at times near-zero visibility.A three-round road salting and clearing started Friday in Toronto, with collectors and arteries plowed.
Weather patterns and traffic levels kept the snow off some major roads, including the Gardiner Expressway, which remained “bare and wet” Friday, city officials said.Warming centres reopened overnight, including Metro Hall, the Scarborough Civic Centre and Mitchell Field Community Centre. Occupancy rate stayed below 70 per cent; residents were to be moved to housing Saturday to keep capacity open for walk-ins during the weekend.
