From scott_stinson: Ontarians wagered $11.5B on sports in one quarter, not counting Super Bowl
Such casual experimentation with sports wagering, as an Ontario resident, is far from unique. The province launched its retail gaming market last April, allowing private operators to compete in the sports-betting space, and business is booming. Ontario’s internet-gaming regulator disclosed last month that in the fiscal quarter ending Dec. 31, total wagers were more than $11.5-billion, an increase of 91 per cent over the previous quarter.
But while it’s not surprising that Ontario, led by open-for-business Conservative premier Doug Ford, has encouraged competition, with 36 regulated operators, many of them large U.S.-based brands like FanDuel and MGM, the province remains an outlier. The other nine have allowed single-sports betting, but only through some version of their respective provincial lottery corporations.Article content
The question of how much and how quickly Canada would allow its sports-betting market to grow has loomed for years, since the United States Supreme Court struck down in 2018 a law that prohibited internet gambling. After several U.S. border states moved to legalize sports wagering, the provinces pushed Ottawa to do the same, which brought about an amendment to the Criminal Code in August, 2021.
Meanwhile, with states like New York and New Jersey leading the way, Americans legally wagered more than US$73-billion in the first 10 months of 2022, up 78 per cent from a year earlier, according to the American Gaming Association. It estimates US$16-billion will be wagered on Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, more than double the 2022 total.Article content
