The Nets’ statement also said that unspecified people in the organization had spent time trying to convince Irving of the problem with his words and actions — which explains why the team took so long to impose a punishment. Once it became clear that he wasn’t going to apologize, they told him to go away. And only after that, with his NBA career in evident peril, did he do so.
It will not be lost on anyone that Irving might have avoided his US$2.2-million suspension had he said something to that effect at any time in the past week. But this is the same guy who refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19 last season, making him unable to play in arenas in cities that had vaccine mandates, which included New York City.
It wasn’t a surprise, then, that Irving would end up imperilling his season for off-court reasons, again, just not this soon and in this way. For a few days there, he was back to being the defiant outsider, supremely confident in his own beliefs and uncaring of the impact that might have on others. Last year he gave comfort to vaccine denialism.

Continued lack of apology or consequences is a failing that extends far beyond Kyrie IrvingContrarianism isn’t intellectualism.
