In November 2021, a series of atmospheric rivers that hit B.C. resulted in deadly flooding that caused billions-of-dollars in damage, washing away bridges and roads, and displacing 14,000 people. On Tuesday, provincial officials said Environment Canada is leading the creation of an atmospheric river system.

Now, residents of hard-hit communities, including Abbotsford and Princeton, are watching the coming fall rains nervously after a months-long drought in many parts of southwestern B.C. He said the first atmospheric river is due Thursday and the second on Sunday, both ranked as Category 2, or moderate, using a system created by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.
