REGINA — Midway through the fourth quarter on Saturday night, a steady stream of Saskatchewan Roughriders fans headed towards the exits at Mosaic Stadium.
The Stamps eliminated the Riders from playoff contention and the final 32-21 scoreline somehow didn’t really reflect just how bad a beatdown this really was.
Had the Stampeders’ offence been a little more efficient when they got into the red zone, they might easily have been up by double digits before the second quarter was halfway through. It was not a preview of things to come. It was just a brief reprieve for the Riders before the ugliness that was on its way.
“It’s been our identity all year, we’ve been great at running the football,” Maier said. “We’ve been relying on our running backs and they were the ones who got the touchdowns going and then Richie makes a hell of a catch in the corner and all of a sudden we’re over 30 points, which is always a goal for us.”
Only a 104-yard kickoff return touchdown by Mario Alford made the final scoreline even vaguely respectable for the Riders.
