I spent years trying to dodge the Christmas season, determined not to buy into the crass commercialization of what’s essentially a Christian holiday. As an…

My son is a young adult now and family dynamics have changed but I think I’ve managed to retain some of that joy. I find it in what I consider to be simple pleasures, wine, food, music, and friends. I’ve managed to make a living out of my passion for wine, and continue to explore musical boundaries, thanks in large part to my association with community radio at CJSW.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

The wines from Domaine Robert Groffier, it should be said, are expensive and hard to find. This family domaine, situated in the Burgundian town of Morey-St-Denis, has a reputation that puts their wines among Burgundy’s elite, with pricing to match. There’s one wine from them that has been available this year that I’ve managed to find, and it’s their passetoutgrain, a Burgundian specialty that’s a blend of pinot noir and gamay, the red grape of Beaujolais fame.

I feel much the same way about the Vina Tondonia . It’s an old-school style of Rioja, and no one does that better in Spain’s Rioja region than Lopez de Heredia. The bodega releases the wines when they feel they are entering a window of drinkability, and the 2010 is the current release. A lot is going on in the wine with layers of spice, oak, smoky cherry fruit and silky tannins.

I feel the same way about a great bottle of Chablis, a chardonnay from Burgundy’s northern outpost. Typically unadorned by oak, and at its best, it displays a complex array of minerals, stone fruits, citrus, and a hint of salinity. Eléonore Moreau’s Chablis is all that; it’s a classically perfect wine that hits all the right notes and when I drank a glass of it with Joni’s Blue on the platter I felt, for about an hour anyway, that all was right in the world.
