Experiment at Sudbury’s SNOLAB captures the first neutrinos detected by water
The experiment is still ongoing, but SNO+ at Sudbury’s SNOLAB has achieved a breakthrough by becoming the first detector on the planet to detect antineutrinos using only ultrapure water and from hundreds of kilometres away.
Among the data collected “was an antineutrino signal that came from the Bruce, Darlington and Pickering nuclear generating stations hundreds of kilometres away.” What was also surprising, SNOLAB said, was that the antineutrino signal was detected in “non-toxic, inexpensive and easy-to-handle” ultrapure water.
