Consider the message of inequality we send if we allow MAiD to people with physical afflictions but not those with mental illnesses.

In her recent article, Anna Nienhuis argues for the cancellation of changes that would extend Canada’sSign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. The important point she considers is this: mental illness has long been stigmatized. Recent years have seen good progress reducing such stigma, with much room for improvement. Nienhuis contends that not including mental illness among eligibility criteria for MAiD is a good measure to protect against such stigma. This, however, is not true.

Against this background, consider what we risk saying if we deny MAiD to people with mental illness. One message is that the suffering of the mentally ill is not as significant as the suffering of the physically ill. While the latter deserve any and all means of addressing their suffering, the former do not. To discount the experiences and plight of people with mental illness in this way risks failing to take their suffering sufficiently seriously.

The variety of forms that mental illness takes calls for a variety of responses tailored to the individual experiences and needs of the people with these illnesses. By including MAiD in this repertoire, we acknowledge the suffering involved in mental illness as real and serious, and we respect the ability and authority of people with mental illness to exercise control over their lives and bodies.
