Up until Mangiapane wrapped his arms around Darnell Nurse for an unnecessary offensive-zone penalty, No. 97 had been blanked. Hadn’t recorded a shot, even. While the Flames managed to pull into a playoff peg just before the NHL’s holiday break, their grip on the second wildcard spot didn’t last long. With Tuesday’s triumph, the Oilers nudged one point ahead in the standings, bumping their neighbours back into ninth.
Skinner made plenty of saves, too — 46 in total. Jacob Markstrom was just as sharp, albeit not nearly as busy, in Calgary’s crease.
