NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POST - Nicole SullivanBEN EOIN — People at Ski Ben Eoin were happy to be finally hitting the slopes for the 2023 winter season after unseasonably warm weather brought more of the hill's worst enemy rain than best friend snow.
"The snow we make is more resilient than natural snow," he said."And we purposely put it in piles to help keep it through the storm." "We deal with it as best as we can. We can't fight mother nature. She always wins. So, we just try to work with her," said MacDonald.Opening weekend was for ski-pass holders only and the office was busy printing ski passes Saturday.
"I remember being a kid, off on Christmas break from school, and so excited to get to the ski hill," he said, smiling."We spent every waking minute at the hill and it always started in December." But temperatures overnight all week are expected to be below zero and cold is what Ski Ben Eoin needs to make snow for the slopes.
"What's also really nice about this hill is it is lit up at night. I was out West for 15 years and all the hills closed at 4 p.m. because they didn't have lights.Shaun MacInnis and his family were also some of the first to be at Ski Ben Eoin opening day. Like Cadegan, he sees a lot of value in purchasing the annual ski passes even when weather cuts down on possible days at the hill.
