The weekend festival on Big Rideau Lake in Portland, Ont. is taking place this year for the first time since 2020.

Instead of the last weekend of January, its customary dates, the 18th edition of the event in Portland, Ont., has been pushed back to Feb. 18-19 because ice conditions nor the long-term weather forecast are favourable, Skate the Lake co-founder and past president Marco Smits said in a media release.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Skate the Lake wasn’t held in 2021 or 2022. Organizers instead began a Skate the Lake Challenge, in which skaters logged their laps on the oval throughout the winter and kept running totals. Last year, 70 skaters recorded 2,703 total kilometres, roughly equivalent to the distance from Portland to Regina, Sask. Skate the Lake’s schedule for Feb. 18 will include morning 10- and 25-kilometre races, a five-kilometre race for children 12 and under and a 5×1-kilometre relay race. On Feb. 19, five- and 50-kilometre races are scheduled.
