Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit will not lay charges against two York Regional Police officers after they shot two 23-year-old men in Markham, killing one, last November.

On that morning, the two undercover officers were in a pickup truck surveilling an SUV as they investigated a series of home invasions near Eyer Drive and Calvert Road. There was a confrontation between the occupants of the vehicle and the officers, which led to a man pointing a loaded gun at an officer’s head, the independent watchdog said. The officers then fired at the men, killing one and seriously injuring the other., which was confirmed as authentic by yorkregion.com through a police source, one can see two men exiting a white SUV to approach a parked black pickup truck on Eyer Drive.
One of the uninjured men runs off screen while the other goes back into the BMW as repeated volleys of shots are fired from the black pickup. The man in the white vehicle then exits to check on the man lying motionless on the street, and turns him over while still more shots are fired from the pickup.The SIU found that the parked black pickup was an unmarked police vehicle, and that the men from the SUV had approached it to confront the pickup’s two occupants about following them.
The wounded man was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and injuries were non-life-threatening. At the time, York police said that two men and a woman were arrested, including the man in hospital.
