The power of the world junior hockey tournament, even after the Hockey Canada scandal and the ongoing economic challenges caused by COVID, is that it evokes so…
An average junior hockey game on television would normally draw about one-tenth the audience of an average Leafs, Canucks, or Canadiens game. The world junior final, which saw Canada beat Czechia in overtime, had 1.2-million viewers more than last year’s slap-happy Academy Awards. The comparison that doesn’t make sense in any way is between the world juniors and the World Cup of soccer. The world junior is a tournament for kids. Played by teenagers on the rise. Played by Connor Bedard and the next group of NHL stars. The World Cup of soccer is the world’s largest tournament and the world’s most popular sport. Just not our world, necessarily. More Canadians watched Canada play in the World Cup than watched the final between Argentina and France. And more watched Team Canada in Halifax than just about anything else.
Hockey still reigns supreme in Canada and Team Canada hockey even more so as scandals are waiting to be untangled but viewers can’t seem to look away.An NHL team seriously investigated the possibility of making an offer for William Nylander a year ago. But they backed away from the idea when they thought he didn’t play with enough passion or interest.
