We apologize, but this video has failed to load.It was a night of contradiction as women’s sport fights to find its place in the landscape of North American professional sports. This was a great night for the Six, in a great building, in a great city, playing a great sport, and maybe there were 600 people here, a lot of them friends and family in the stands.The game deserved more. The players deserved better.
This is a remarkable time for women’s sports in North America and maybe all around the world. Women’s hockey is growing. Women’s soccer is growing, with a professional league coming to Canada. Professional women’s basketball is coming to Toronto for the first time for a WNBA game in May, already sold out at the Scotiabank Arena.
There is much to like about women’s hockey at this level. The speed of the game. The quality of play. The lack of whistles makes for a brisker pace. The lack of special teams makes the game seem less uneven. They skate faster than they used to skate. They shoot harder than they used to shoot. This was a game in need of a full house, in need of atmosphere that came as much from the stands as it did from those on the ice.
The sport isn’t big enough to be divided in two and the sport isn’t old enough to support any kind of divide. But if the show Monday night was the lower of two tiers, then it was enough to pull you in, enough to have you wanting more, and that’s with the best in the world not part of this league, necessarily.
