A provincial study says the current system is not the "best fit and long-term sustainable governance model" for the growing community.
“UEL residents have been asking for years for changes in their governance structure,” said Jen McCutcheon, the elected Metro Vancouver representative for the area.
Despite their proximity, residents of UEL and UBC lands are governed and taxed differently, he said, but in both communities, people feel they have “inadequate local representation.” But the provincial report notes UEL could benefit from Vancouver’s much larger tax base and its ability to apply for senior government grants. On the downside, there could be “immediate increased costs” for some services, as well as issues maintaining UEL’s community identity in a large city.
In a statement, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs noted the UEL is the only urban area in B.C. where local services and regulations do not come primarily from a local government, but from the province.
