NDP Leader Rachel Notley on Thursday pilloried Premier Danielle Smith and demanded she apologize for Smith’s suggestion that unvaccinated people have faced more discrimination than any other group she’s seen in her lifetime.
EDMONTON—In an early glimpse of the kind of fireworks Albertans may see come their next general election, “I’ve been overwhelmed by thousands and thousands of folks who feel deeply hurt and, frankly, a little fearful, as a result of the comments coming from the premier on her first day of office,” Notley said.
Smith has taken criticism from political leaders, community organizations and fellow premiers — Saskatchewan’s Scott Moe and British Columbia’s John Horgan — since saying Tuesday, during her first day in office, that unvaccinated people are the most discriminated against group she’s seen. The tweet came with a political meme that had photos of Smith, one of her in front of a giant pumpkin, one of her with some kids and another of her in front of what appeared to be Star Trek’s starship Enterprise doing the Vulcan salute. “What scares Rachel Notley,” the caption read.
