Stutzle has scored 10 goals and 17 assists in 28 games and had settled in as a top line centre with captain Brady Tkachuk and veteran Claude Giroux on his wings since Josh Norris suffered his shoulder injury five games into the season. Pinto, 22, has nine goals and four assists in 24 games. A chemistry has gradually developed with wingers Alex DeBrincat and Drake Batherson and Smith is reluctant to break up that trio.
At this point, the Senators other potential centres include Derick Brassard, Mark Kastelic, Dylan Gambrell and Rourke Chartier, who was recalled from Belleville of the American Hockey League on Monday.
