PANTHERS 7, SENATORS 2 The Ottawa Senators have been reduced to playing out the string this spring.
This was a rough one in every sense of the word. The two teams combined for 162 minutes in penalties and even coach D.J. Smith was thrown out for chirping at the officials with just under seven minutes left.
The Senators finished the game without rugged winger Austin Watson. He had to be helped to the dressing room after blocking a shot late in the second period and didn’t return for the third. Eetu Luostarinen and Sam Reinhart scored less than two minutes apart for the Panthers only minutes after Sogaard took over from a struggling Leevi Merilainen. After running into Florida’s goaltender for what the Panthers perceived was the second time in the period, Brady Tkachuk set off a firestorm. He fought with Florida’s Marc Staal and they were both thrown out because it was the second fight during the sequence.
Giroux, who finished last season with the Panthers, was able to get the Senators on the board. He was able to pick up a rebound in the slot and beat Alex Lyon at 4:25 of the second on the Senators’ 27th shot of the game.
