The NBA’s East is deep enough that Toronto won’t be able to cruise to a playoff spot. They need results amid all of Nurse’s fiddling
Twenty games, to use Nurse’s off-the-cuff signpost, puts the Raptors at the end of November. By then they will have played Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland, all East playoff contenders, multiple times each. The Raptors should be well and truly assessed.
Nurse on Wednesday shrugged off the suggestion that starting with a schedule dotted with so many rivals was a benefit, saying that for his team, they have to play their style every night, no matter the opponent. It was an interesting comment, implying that for all of their good qualities, he doesn’t expect too many nights when they can waltz to victory.Article content
His job, Nurse said, is to “figure out what the ceiling is and try to get there.” The Raptors, he said, will “try to climb up that ladder of where the team can go.” At least the metaphors were consistent. It was just one night, but the Raptors showed two things that we already knew. They will come at you in waves, and they will come at you in waves. The next test comes Friday in Brooklyn, another team that has more high-end offensive talent but has never been known for offensive coherence.
