The focus on equality and opportunity in relation to other provinces is key because what truly drives resentment –– as we also see with growing generational animosity –– isn’t not getting what one wants or not having what someone else does, but being denied a fair shot at these things. It’s this sense of injustice that, when allowed to run rampant, destabilizes societies. It’s also why left-leaning politicians’ myopic focus on equal outcomes continue to fail while breeding more and more anger.
On the flip side, antagonism among regions and provinces makes it harder for any federal party to govern effectively and efficiently, particularly when major issues of the day, like health care and housing, largely exist in the provincial domain.Article content Quebec is an outlier in other ways. While it and Newfoundland and Labrador’s resentments are strongly connected to feeling culturally misunderstood by the rest of Canada, other provinces are angrier about believing they contribute more than their fair share to the nation.Article content
The report finds this especially true in the Prairies. “In these provinces, the sense that they contribute more than their fair share is combined with the view that Quebec contributes less.
