Smith, who lives in a rural area and is seeking to win a byelection in Brooks-Medicine Hat, added she would be looking to boost rural representation in cabinet when she names her new executive council on Oct. 21.She noted the bulk of the existing cabinet — 15 out of 26 positions — were from Calgary, while her party’s caucus was largely rural with it holding 39 of 41 seats that are outside Calgary and Edmonton.
“We have a low population but high infrastructure responsibilities,” he said. “A lot of our infrastructure is what gets commodities to market.” He was also heartened to hear Smith discuss unpaid property taxes by oil companies, an ongoing rural issue that he says costs rural municipalities millions.Article content
Rural municipalities are in less agreement, however, with the prospect of a provincial police force, citing in a public letter last spring potential gaps in service and rising costs.
