Berating the CBC no substitute for taking a principled position on serious social issues
except under rare circumstances. This is noteworthy as Sweden was the first country to officially and legally recognize gender transition as early as 1972.Adam Zivo: Detransitioner's lawsuit shows Canada is providing inadequate care
The European examples demonstrate a growing consensus across the ideological spectrum that when it comes to minors who lack legal agency in every other important sense, such as not being eligible to vote, it’s extremely problematic to allow immature young people suffering gender dysphoria to make life-changing and potentially irreversible and, in some cases, lifelong health-damaging decisions, without their parents’ explicit consent.
The timidity of the Conservative party on this issue is baffling for two related reasons. First, the position that minors should not be allowed to make the choice to transition without their parents’ explicit consent is at the heart of classical liberal and conservative ideals. If the principal party of the right chooses to remain silent on this key issue in the culture wars, it is orphaning many Canadians on its side of the ideological spectrum.
The fact that all major political parties either endorse the progressive view on transitioning for minors, or remain silent, leaves many Canadians voiceless. Obviously, the Liberals and the NDP have an ideological view on this, and to be fair to them, their policies and platforms are in line with that view.
Arguing that the CBC ought to be defunded is no substitute for taking a principled position on serious social issues. In doing so, and in giving up on the future of our kids, because the stakes are no less, the Conservatives are betraying their own core values. That means robbing Canadians of the opportunity to have a mature political conversation on a defining issue of our times.
