Major Canadian telecom company promoting the use of 5G technology in the mining industry by creating 'a centre of excellence' at the NORCAT mine in Levack which will include new 5G cell service in the northern part of Sudbury
Rogers announced Wednesday it has created a new Rogers Technology Centre of Excellence located within the NORCAT Underground Centre in Levack. At the same time, the company is installing a new 5G cellular tower site to deliver a higher degree of "connectivity" for some northern parts of the City of Greater Sudbury.
“We are excited to partner with Rogers to establish the Rogers Technology Centre of Excellence and further validate our role to serve as the global one-stop shop for all that is the future of mining technology and innovation.” The Rogers Technology Centre of Excellence will use more powerful 5G wireless signals to test and develop digital technology for the global mining industry. The company said the private wireless network in use at the test mine is big step up from 4G, enabling clients using the NORCAT Underground Centre “to develop, test, and demonstrate scalable technologies.
Rogers also said the NORCAT project will be used for research and a test bed for new and emerging technologies related to mining and industrial automation. Rogers said it has already begun installation of the 5G network at the mine and enhancements outside of the mine will occur in the coming year.
