Review: Margaritaville a lightweight but entertaining run-through of popular songs yyc

It fell to Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley, who worked together on such TV sitcoms as The Millers, Raising Hope, My Name is Earl and Yes Dear, to turn the songs of Jimmy Buffett and, in particular, his iconic 1977 hit Margaritaville, into a feel-good musical comedy called Escape to Margaritaville.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

You have to give Garcia and O’Malley credit. In a little over two hours, they manage to have someone on stage nibble sponge cake, strum a six-string, search for a lost shaker of salt, step on a bottle top, get a tattoo or dream about weight loss. That’s just being faithful to the lyrics in Margaritaville. There’s also the need for an active volcano, buried treasure, tap-dancing zombie insurance agents, a guitar lesson, a hallucination or two and some bitter-sweet reminiscing.

As the main romantic duo, McMillan and Johnson have soft ballads like Three Chords, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Coast of Marseilles and they have the strong voices to bring some vibrant life to Buffet’s blend of country and calypso. It might be sacrilegious to say so, but, Johnson might just do more justice to these songs than Buffett did.
