Review: Alberta Ballet brings Giselle's magical beauty to life yyc
In the second act, Giselle is laid to rest in the forest and Hilarion goes to visit the grave, where the Wilis, the spirits of young women who died of heartbreak, have gathered. Led by Queen Myrtha , the Wilis force wanderers of the forest to dance to their death. Hilarion meets his end and Albrecht is surrounded by the Wilis, but Giselle’s spirit interrupts the ritual.
The first act is bathed in greens, reds and browns by lighting designer Michael Mazzola. The stage design is full of trees and foliage that hangs from the ceiling, with a couple of village houses on either side of the stage. The backdrop transitions from purple to shades of orange, and this honours the celebration theme in the first act. The choreography in solos and duets is sweet and innocent, showing the strengths of the ballerinas as they spin en pointe.
