Port Hawkesbury product spent 18 in the professional ranks

Current occupation: Team Relations Specialist with the Columbus Blue Jackets

“I waited, and they brought me in to do an interview, I went through the whole interview process and was fortunate enough to get the position.” The son of Jim and Carol Johnson of Port Hawkesbury admits he didn’t realize how much work occurred on the hockey operations side of things during his playing career.

After having played for Columbus twice in his NHL career, Johnson was familiar with the city and area, which was another key reason for landing the job with the team. Former professional hockey player Aaron Johnson had two stints with the Columbus Blue Jackets during his lengthy career. He’s back with the NHL but working in the hockey operations department since his retirement from the game in 2021. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedGrowing up in Port Hawkesbury, Johnson played with the Strait Richmond Minor Hockey Association and proudly wore the Pirates jersey. He played with the organization until peewee before making an unusual career decision.

Despite his success, the thought of eventually playing professional hockey wasn’t in the back of his mind. It wasn’t until he learned his neighbour, Tiger Mackie, had received a tryout with the Boston Bruins in 1935 that the thought of the NHL came about. Johnson, who had been enrolled in French emersion during his elementary school years, made the move to the Quebec-based city and was successful in making the team as a 16-year-old player.

Johnson would hear his name called by the Blue Jackets in the third round, No. 85 overall, at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in Florida. The Blue Jackets manager at the time was Summerside, P.E.I.’s Doug MacLean. Johnson would later be returned to Rimouski and was eventually traded to the Quebec Remparts during the 2002-03 season and once again played in the Memorial Cup with the Quebec City-based club.In 2003-04, Johnson began his professional career and suited up for the Syracuse Crunch, who at the time was the Blue Jackets' American Hockey League affiliate team.

“It was a great opportunity for me to get called up right away and be given that opportunity, but I almost wish I would have stayed in the AHL and developed at that level and learned how to win before making the NHL,” said Johnson, noting he had a number of injuries including MCL tears during his career.

Johnson would be part of the Bruins team that would win the Eastern Conference title and advance to the Stanley Cup against the Blackhawks, who went on to win the 2013 Cup in six games.
