A report concluded that the Annapolis Royal wharf can only be expected to last another five years, and the town should budget nearly $5 million for its replacement.
ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, N.S. — The clock is ticking on Annapolis Royal’s wharf.
They prepared the report after visiting the site in June. The report was submitted to the town on Sept. 22 and discussed at the Oct. 5 committee of the whole meeting.The town hired Performance Welding to do some patch work earlier this year after the engineers said it was required to cover holes in the steel sheet pile walls to keep the gravel and rock, which provide support for the structure, inside the wharf.“It needs to be understood that the wharf is nearing the end of its useful life.
“This much change in the last five years leads me to conclude that in another five years its usage will be severely restricted as deterioration will be much more extensive,” they wrote. Boyer said the wharf is a valuable piece of infrastructure that represents opportunities for the town. It will be a big project for a town with a population of 530 in the 2021 census and with an annual budget of about $2 million.
