Sunday, March 12, marks 14 years since Cougar Helicopters Flight 491 crashed into the ocean east of St. John's, resulting in the loss of 17 of the 18 people on board. On March 12, 2009, Cougar Helicopters Flight 491 crashed while en route to offshore oil rigs. The Sikorsky S-92 helicopter was transporting workers from St. John’s to two offshore oil platforms around 9 a.m. that day when it reported mechanical trouble and turned back. It went down at 9:48 a.m, about 65 kilometres southeast of St. John’s.
“Flight 491 resonates with the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, and it has had a lasting impact on our province and offshore industry. The tragedy serves as a constant reminder of the challenges faced by those working in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore,” said Charlene Johnson, Energy NL chief executive officer.
