An officer with the RCMP’s Southeast Traffic Service doing a roadside stop Tuesday on Highway 101 in Upper Sackville was nearly struck by a passing vehicle. - Nova Scotia RCMPUPPER SACKVILLE, N.S. — An RCMP officer was thrown to the ground and his vehicle damaged when a car hit it as it was parked along the side of a highway for a traffic stop this week.
“In this case, it was a near-miss with the officer, but the vehicle did strike our police vehicle, leaving light damage, but it doesn't matter what the level of damage is to a police vehicle, it would have been fatal to our member had the vehicle struck our police officer.” The man was issued a summary offence ticket for failing to move over, which carries a fine over $350 for a first offence.Tremblay said emergency responders constantly have to be alert about passing drivers.
“From my personal experience, whenever you do pull over a vehicle, it does happen on a daily basis,” Tremblay said. The Move Over law has helped, he said, adding that other provinces, including New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Ontario, have similar rules.
