A 2021 Fraser Institute study shows Canada\u0027s health\u002Dcare availability and access is generally lower than the OECD average.

is one of many reports that details our poor results relative to our spending.

The number 1 problem in health care is the lack of doctors, nurses and other health professionals. The country needs a health human-resource strategy to assure that those needs are met. That would require some combination of expanding medical schools and making it easier for foreign-trained doctors to practise here, steps Ontario has already taken. Ontario has also said that doctors from other provinces can practise here by right, without having to go through a bureaucratic process beforehand.

The fact that 1.8-million Ontarians have no family doctor is not some kind of happenstance or bad luck. It’s the result of years of failing to plan for and fund an adequate supply of new physicians, even though that demand is predictable. Ontario is not unique. This is a national problem that must be fixed.Article content
