And some financial rodeo cowboys and self-mythologizers with too much influence took a much-needed plunge. Take Sam Bankman-Fried, 30, poster boy for the destructive scam that is cryptocurrency, whose wealth hit $22 billion a couple of years ago, making him the youngest richest guy ever, and contemplate his flaming crash to Earth.
Cryptocurrency's only practical use seems to be for rogue states, money launderers and other sordid enterprises to exchange dark money out of sight. That, plus the calculation that the computing power needed to create electronic “coins” — the units of exchange —requires as much electricity as a country the size of Holland, makes crypto’s near-demise, if that’s what’s happening, a good-news event.
Beyond that, a device of our increasingly shallow mindset — everything meant to be blurted out in brief form without thinking twice, and without explanation. Let us applaud its passing, if that’s what’s happening. The art of thinking before talking may even make a comeback. Some are even questioning his fabled genius, pointing out the massive public subsidies for his cutting-edge enterprises that helped make him a success, and saying that, like many media-hyped billionaires, Musk is primarily a genius at building his image. His comedown may knock the shine off the billionaire cult.
