The COVID\u002D19 pandemic disrupted routine childhood immunization coverage in Canada, and officials are scrambling to catch up.

In Ottawa alone, that gap amounts to tens of thousands of doses of vaccines missed during the pandemic, public health officials estimate.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. Ottawa Public Health estimates that children in the city have missed “tens of thousands” of doses of routine vaccinations for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and pertussis since the pandemic began in 2020. Those diseases have the potential to cause community outbreaks, Ottawa Public Health Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches said, something that has been seen in the United States and elsewhere.

Ottawa Public Health is engaged in childhood immunization catch-up efforts in schools, including sending letters to just over 12,000 students whose records show missed immunizations, and holding special clinics to close the gap. A January report published by Public Health Ontario noted that OPH had already made significant progress with catch-up clinics for vaccinations offered in schools. School closures during the pandemic disrupted those clinics.

Under the soon-to-be-launched system, parents can book appointments and send the information automatically to their public health units, something that is currently done, painstakingly, with phone calls and letters. The new system should make it easier for families to track their children’s vaccines and for public health to have a more accurate picture of vaccination rates and gaps. The CanImmunize app also allows parents to track children’s vaccine records digitally.
