THUNDER BAY — Five years after it was first promised, ground is being broken in the construction of a new Thunder Bay correctional facility.
"Replacing out-of-date infrastructure that no longer meets current needs is an investment in corrections modernization and public safety," Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said in a written statement. The province said the new facility will address capacity pressures, create additional space for programming and expand supports for inmates with mental health issues. It will also feature dedicated Indigenous cultural spaces, with both indoor and outdoor components that include a smudging space, sweat lodge, teaching lodge, and greenhouse.
