'I’m excited to get back there as is everyone else,' says Canadian National Women’s Team and PWHPA member Blayre Turnbull.

Halifax’s Jill Saulnier and Stellarton’s Blayre Turnbull are sure to be big draws for this year’s Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association’s Secret Dream Gap Tour stop in Truro. File - FileTRURO - Not only are local hockey fans looking forward to the return of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association to Truro, so too are the players.

World championship games were also scheduled to be played in Truro and Turnbull said having this year’s Secret Dream Gap Tour stop in Truro somewhat helps to make up for the 2021 disappointment of not getting to compete in her province. “Obviously, I was looking forward to the opportunity to play in a world championship in Halifax but since that was cancelled, this is exciting for us to, kind of, make up for that and help people gain the experience of watching us play. It’s also great for us to experience the hospitality of the East Coast and showcase just how exciting our hockey can be, down in our neck of the woods.”

“So just having the opportunity to come back to the East Coast and showcase what we’ve been working on for so long is crucial and fundamental for the growth of the game,” she added, agreeing with Turnbull the location helps to make up for 2021. “I’m looking forward to it. We just had a great showcase last weekend , a great start, so it should be a lot of fun … it’s going to be exciting.

“One of the biggest things we’re doing with the PWHPA is creating a platform of visibility for women’s hockey,” Saulnier said. “So for the girls to be able to come out, watch us and see us in real life gives them a little extra boost of motivation and something to dream about.” Last year, the Selects won the Atlantic championship and had a strong showing at the nationals in Okotoks, AB.
