On Tuesday, the province announced that internationally trained engineers no longer require Canadian work experience to be licensed in Ontario.
Ontario Labour Minister Monte McNaughton says the province’s regulator for professional engineers has dropped the requirement, which he calls a “game changer” for qualified immigrant engineers, helping to fill roughly 7,000 vacant positions. Professional Engineers Ontario says up to 60 per cent of the license applicants it reviews every year are internationally trained.
McNaughton expects all regulators, from architects to land surveyors, to proactively drop the requirement before the end of the year, when a deadline is in place. “It’s an all-too-common experience: meeting a skilled newcomer trained as an engineer, doctor, or accountant, working in a low-wage job that has nothing to do with their profession,” said McNaughton. “Our government has a plan to build a stronger Ontario that works for everyone, and we’re going to do it by unleashing the talent we have right here at home. I congratulate Professional Engineers Ontario for taking this historic step to support our mission.
