Breaking: Premiers accept Justin Trudeau’s health-care funding offer, move on to individual deals
OTTAWA—Premiers have agreed to accept the federal government’s 10-year $46.2-billion hike for health spending and will immediately move to negotiating bilateral deals but say they’re concerned the federal proposal is not a long-term solution.
Under what the Trudeau government told premiers was its “best offer,” annual federal transfer payments to the provinces would increase significantly — by $17.3 billion over the next decade — and will include an immediate $2-billion injection to tackle the crisis in pediatric hospitals and emergency rooms, and ongoing wait times for surgeries.
There will also be an additional $1.7 billion over five years to hike salaries for personal service workers. A senior Ontario government official, speaking confidentially to discuss internal deliberations, said the premiers realize the 10-year, $46.2 billion offer won’t be sweetened.
