The federal government approved Port of Vancouver\u0027s $3.5 billion Roberts Bank Terminal 2 proposal after a lengthy environmental assessment.

What is being proposed:

According to the Port of Vancouver, West Coast facilities could run out of capacity by the mid-2020s and the expansion will increase container capacity on the West Coast by one-third, enabling some $3 billion in GDP growth.Article contentWhile being listed as critical for the expansion of trade, Terminal 2’s construction would entail filling in land in sensitive habitat in an intertidal zone important for shorebirds, migrating birds, chinook salmon and marine wildlife including orcas.

The federal government will also spend $45 million to accommodate project impacts on Indigenous rights and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority will put up a $150 million guarantee to ensure it complies with conditions over the first three years.Conservation groups greeted the approval as “devastating news,” in the words of Christianne Wilhelmson, executive of the Georgia Strait Alliance, and a decision government knows will do damage to orcas, salmon and shorebirds.
