Special Investigations Unit closes file on arrest of Sudbury man who broke his foot fleeing Greater Sudbury Police officer

An investigation into the arrest of a Sudbury man whose foot was broken while fleeing Greater Sudbury Police has been closed.

Information provided in a news release from the Special Investigations Unit states that on Sept. 15, 2022, the man was walking in the front door of the Safe Bed Program facility at 336 Pine Street when a GSPS officer at the door stopped him, thinking the man matched the description of someone police were looking for.

The release states the man, whose name was not released, fled north on the east side of the facility’s grounds and jumped over a retaining wall, falling a couple of metres “onto rough terrain on the other side, and slid down an embankment, fracturing his foot." “Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, the man was found to have jumped of his own volition, leaving patently nothing to investigate as far as criminal liability of the officer involved,” the report from SIU Director Joseph Martino states. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. SIU investigators are civilians.
